I
was
born
in
Michigan
on
Friday
the
13th.
After
two
boys,
my
parents
were
thrilled
to
have
a
baby
girl.
Longing
for
warm
weather,
my
family
moved
to
Riverside,
CA,
where
we
built
a
modern house high on a hilltop.
During
elementary
school,
my
father
packed
up
the
family
for
a
new,
exciting
experience:
a
Quonset hut in the South Pacific, more precisely, Guam.
Growing
up,
I
loved
watching
the
adventures
of
my
mischievous
older
brothers,
who
turned
out
perfect.
Walker
Evans,
today
known
as
“The
Legend”
in
off-road
racing
and
Paulden
Evans,
an artist with work widely displayed all over the world.
Our
father’s
career
started
as
a
general
contractor
and
later
a
missionary
minister.
Our
mother
worked
as
a
teacher
and
principal
of
a
private
school.
She
was
also
the
owner
and
curator of the non-profit Riverside Children’s Museum.
From
an
early
age
my
summer
days
did
not
include
tossing
a
ball
on
the
beach.
I
had
the
task
of
dusting
dolls
in
that
museum.
All
five
thousand
to
be
exact.
While
I
resented
them
at
first,
eventually
they
became
my
friends.
Perched
on
shelves
encircling
the
room,
I
began
making
up
stories
and
poems
for
this
captive
audience.
They
never
cracked
a
smile
or
said
anything,
but
listened
intently.
Soon
I
discovered
a
hidden
treasure:
the
world
of
writing.
Scribbling
down
a
poem
at
the
age
of
nine,
it
was
published in a book. With that happiness, I thought I had touched the moon.
Taking
words
and
arranging
them
into
a
story
will
forever
be
exhilarating.
Family
time
is
the only thing better and perhaps, eating chocolate cake.
At
the
heart
of
my
stories
are
strong,
extraordinary
women.
Heroines
of
integrity
beset
by
tragedy,
murder,
and
lust
on
their
journeys
through
life.
At
times
nearly
losing
their
souls.
If
I
touch my readers’ hearts in any way through my novels, then I am deeply indebted to them.
